Dorm food isn't always the greatest. On the whole my school's isn't too bad, however, I do quite enjoy making food for myself. Recently the boyfriend, herein referred to as Bear, and I have an opportunity to try sushi. Now I have always been a fan of seafood, but the idea of raw fish scared me a little, but the sushi was amazing. Now going out to eat is rather expensive, especially on a college student's budget, but i was craving more. So off to the Internet to see if there was an easier and cheaper way to get my seafood fix. As it turns out sushi is quite easy to make. I personally haven't braved using raw fish in my homemade sushi. As a substitute I use smoked salmon or crab, but one can easily use canned tuna, or what ever your heart desires.
The first step is collecting the ingredients. Below I've listed the common ingredients I use in the various rolls I make. Bear and I are always experimenting with new twists so don't be afraid to use different ones. *note* each roll is cut into between 6 and 8 pieces.
Ingredients
- Smoked salon- You won't need much, one small package should make around 5 rolls. Bear swears that Sockeye Smoked Salmon is the best specie of salmon.
- Nori- This is toasted seaweed and serves as the wrapper and base for the rice. You should be able to find it in the Asian foods or international foods section of any major grocery.
- Sushi Rice- This is a pretty major ingredient, it's the rice after all. You should be able to find this with the rice or international foods in any major grocery.
- Avocado-Find one that is slightly soft but not squishy. You're only gonna need one even then you might not use it all, try the left over in a sandwich with chicken.
- Cream cheese-Before you are gonna want the cream cheese to be slightly warm so it's easy to spread.
- Chives-I love these but they are optional
- Onion- Same goes for this, if you don't like them don't use them.
- Cucumber- Personally I don't like these but Bear loves them and will steal pieces while I'm preparing the sushi.
- Rice vinegar-Look for this with the Asian food in the grocery
- Sugar
- Salt
Over the next few days I'll be detailing how to make sushi rice and the various rolls that I've tried and so delicious sushi eye candy.
